5S - A Systematic Way of Improving Workplace Efficiency
This is a well established system derived from the highly regarded quality practices introduced as part of Kaizen and Total Quality Management.
It addresses the need for organisations to reduce clutter and make necessary resources (materials, equipment, information) more easily accessible.
5S comprises a 5-stage method of improving workplace efficiency and establishing good practise as normal routine.
The effects are: reduction of waste in labour and materials, improved safety, and improved staff motivation. The time and effort involved in introducing
this system are usually very quickly recovered through improved efficiency.
The name 5S is taken from the original Japanese names for the five stages, each beginning with the sound "S". The English names begin with different letters
so it is not obvious where the name came from.
5S basic principles
The five stages in the 5S programme are briefly described as follows:
Clean up (Seiri).
This involves getting rid of all clutter, redundant equipment etc.
Arrange (Seiton).
Rearranging the workplace so that frequently-used items (materials, equipment, information) are most readily to hand, and less frequently used items are put out of the way.
Neaten (Seiso).
Droppings, spillages are cleared away or cleaned up promptly. This affects safety and hygiene as well as efficiency. This is also introduced for shared places that usually get neglected.
Discipline (Seiketsu).
Having got the workplaces in decent order, everybody must adopt a disciplied approach to keeping them that way. Procedures are used to enforce continued application of the first three principles.
Continual improvement (Shitsuke).
The system is regularly reviewed to take account of new requirements, and seek opportunities to introduce further improvements.
